Granny Square Balaclava

I was scrolling through Facebook one day and I seen an advertisement from the clothing brand 'Cider' for a crochet balaclava. This inspired me to make and design my own crochet balaclava so I can share it with you. YouTube video for this tutorial is now live!!


-MATERIALS-

·        3 x 100g balls of super chunky yarn in colour of choice

·        10mm crochet hook

·        Embroidery needle and scissors

 

-ABBREVIATIONS-

·        Magic Loop (I chain two and crochet into first loop to create ring)

·        CH – Chain

·        ST – Stitch

·        SL ST – Slip stitch

·        SK ST – Skip stitch

·        SC – Single crochet

·        HDC – Half double crochet

·        DC – Double crochet

·        JOIN and FO – SL ST into next ST, chain one, cut yarn

·        FO- Fasten off

·        T – Turn

 

-CONSTRUCTION NOTES- 

-        Pattern written inside ** should all be made into the same stitch.

-        Pattern written inside () should be repeated the number of times stated.

-        Pattern is written using US Crochet terminology.

-        Make with larger or small crochet hook for a smaller or larger fit.

-        CH2 counts as HDC

-        There are no SC between clusters, this is to keep the gaps tight.

-        Completed sizes measures 11” across.



Granny Square – make 2 begin with chosen colour.

Note – I change colour each round, to do this fasten off at the end of each round and re-join new yarn in any corner section with a CH2. If you chose to make this in one colour, slip stitch to a corner space at the end of each round.


1.      CH5, SLST into the 1st CH to form a loop, working into the loop CH2, HDC2, CH2, (HDC3, CH2) 3 times, SL ST into the top of CH2, SL ST to CH2 corner space.

2.      CH2, HDC2, CH2, HDC3 all into corner ST, (HDC3, CH2, HDC3) all into next CH2 space, repeat () 3 times, SL ST into the top of CH2, SL ST to CH2 corner space.

3.      CH2, HDC2, CH2, HDC3 all into corner ST, HDC3 into the space between each of the next 2 clusters from previous row, (*HDC3, CH2, HDC3* all into CH2 space, HDC3 into the space between each of the next 2 clusters from previous row) repeat () 3 times, SL ST into the top of CH2, SL ST to CH2 corner space.

 4-5. CH2, HDC2, CH2, HDC3 all into corner ST, HDC3 into each of the spaces between the clusters from the previous row, (*HDC3, CH2, HDC3* all into CH2 space, HDC3 into each of the spaces between the clusters from the previous row) repeat () 3 times, SL ST into the top of CH2, SL ST to CH2 corner space. – 2 rows.

6.      SC2, HDC3 all into corner stitch, HDC3 into the space between each of the next 2 clusters from previous row, (*HDC3, CH2, HDC3* all into CH2 space, HDC3 into each of the spaces between the clusters from the previous row) repeat () twice, HDC3, 2SC all into the last corner space, SC15.

Join and FO.


Joining the pieces together:

·        Hold both wrong sides of the pieces together.

·        The SC row from previous round will be the front of the pieces where the face will sit.

·        SC through consecutive stitches from both pieces are the top and back ONLY (blue arrows below.)

·        SC around the 4 remaining opening sides to neaten edges and made the last row all the same colour.

Neck Strap – make with chosen colour.

1.      CH35, continue and SC directly around the bottom two sites of the balaclava where the neck will sit. When at opposite side of neck collar, CH35.

Join and FO.
